Happy Valentine’s Day!

I love this day because it forces us to slow down and share how much our relationships mean to us.  I am not one who buys gifts to show this (mostly because I do not prepare myself ahead of time), but I am one to show my love with food! 🙂  I hope your day includes giving and receiving love and appreciation!

This week’s blog includes information about Pre-K graduation, assessments, shut down day, and also an interesting article about outside play.

Our winter assessments are completed!  Your child’s assessment was placed in their mailbox on Thursday of this week.  The period which we accessed your child was between 11/1/2019-1/31/2020.  If you would like to meet with your child’s teacher to discuss the assessment please stop by the office.  The best time to schedule a meeting is between 8:30-10:00 and 2:30-3:30.

Our registration for our fall Pre-K program is coming to an end next Friday, February 21st!  Please make sure if your child is eligible for Pre-K (their birthday being on or before 10/15/16) to bring in the last page of your letter AND a $100 deposit by 5:30 on 2/21.  If you have any questions about this procedure, please stop by the office or e-mail  me at jvachon@parksideclc.com.

Our shut down day is quickly approaching!  I always look forward to meet with our team and work together towards goals to better our program!  This training day is going to be full of new information to better ourselves as professionals as well as a program.  We will start with a training from TJ Holloway who will be talking about emotional intelligence with us and how we can be reflective to how we respond to different experiences/events to help us have more composure when this happens again.  We will also be talking with Todd Schutz, who is the franchise owner chick-fill-a.  He is going to be discussing their philosophy on customer service and ways to help us improve our skills.  The last part of our day is going to include recognizing some of our teachers on our team for their time at Parkside.  Did you know that both Miss Lisa and Stephanie have been here since Parkside opened?!  They are the longest-employed teachers we have on our team…13 years they will be celebrating!    In addition, Miss Lynna had her 10th year anniversary!  Miss Mindy celebrated her 4th year anniversary in December!  No wonder I always say how awesome our team is…they really are a part of my family when I get the opportunity to work with them for this long!  In the afternoon we will be discussing the changes to our playground beginning Memorial weekend!  I can’t tell you how excited I am about this HUGE project!  Removing some of the traditional playground equipment and putting more natural materials and toys will provide more challenging gross motor opportunities and include more balancing opportunities as well as more creativity!

Over the past 5 years I have become very interested in the unique opportunities of natural playgrounds as well as the developmental changes children are having due to the lack of outside play.  As you know, outside play is important to me.  Over the past week we have found ourselves staring out at the playground from inside craving to be out, but the weather was not supporting it!  We do go outside when the temperature (feels like temperature) is 20 degrees for infants and toddlers and 15 degrees for preschool.  This doesn’t always mean that we get to stay outside for a whole hour, our teachers carefully monitor to make sure children are not too cold or wet to play safely outside.  Below, I found an article that I thought was extremely interesting regarding not only the physical benefits of being outside but also what the benefits of a longer recess provides for children.  This article talks about the benefits for elementary school, but I’m sure you will agree the benefits include early childhood programs, such as Parkside!

Have a great weekend!
