Hello Parkside Families!

I hope your Friday, the 13th is treating you well (if you are a suspicious person)!  This week we had fun learning about what fall brings to us: including the leaves are beginning to change color, the temperature is cooler, and all of the great things we can make with apples.  This week’s blog includes events for September, curriculum and classroom changes, as well as a recipe for chunky applesauce which is what we are making in our cooking special this month.

Have you seen the pictures of all of our staff?  This week Emily McIntosh developed the last of our staff pictures.  All of our classroom teachers have their pictures next to their classroom and all of our fabulous Part-Time teachers are on the wall in the hallway.  Thanks again to Emily McIntosh for developing a system which will hopefully help our families and visitors know who is who at Parkside!

Speaking of Emily McIntosh, she will be at Parkside on Tuesday and Wednesday, September 23rd and 24th.  Next week, we will print a schedule for each classroom’s time for pictures.  If your child attends Parkside on Tuesday and Thursdays only, please plan to have your child’s picture taken on Tuesday; if your child attends on Monday/Wednesday/Friday please plan to have them ready on Wednesday regardless of what day your child’s class is going.  We will only take pictures of children who have returned their order forms! You will receive these in the upcoming week! Please speak with your child’s teacher or the office if you have any questions!

Our Pre-K kids are going to on their first field trip to Treworgy’s Apple Orchards on September 18th!  This is one of our favorite field trips of the year; the kids will pick an apple, bring home a pumpkin, have a hayride, and have a yummy donut for a treat!  The kids will leave Parkside at 9:00 and return at 11:00. Parents, if you are interested in joining us please let your child’s teacher know! The permission slip is on top of the cubbies in the Olympic room.  As a reminder, please dress your child according to the weather: with layers and boots if necessary.

Our Infant/Toddler classrooms have been exploring with their exploration baskets, which supports the Heuristic learning approach we have been working on.  Have you seen these baskets? They are cooper and have a variety of sensory items. If you haven’t seen these, please ask your child’s teacher about them. We are gearing up to adding more baskets into our classrooms over the upcoming weeks!  Our Preschool classrooms have been introducing the cooking center in their classrooms. Next week they will be working on peeling apples! This is a tool which will be introduced in small groups so that children understand how to use this tool and to be safe while using it.  Stay tuned for how next week goes!

In the upcoming weeks, we will have a letter inviting families to participate in our pumpkin patch!  Stay tuned for more information in the upcoming weeks!

Here are the recipes for homemade chunky applesauce.  Our preschool kids made their own applesauce by cooking the apples before the class so that they could mash them and pour them into a baggie with the spices.  The Yosemite and Olympic kids had them for lunch later in the day! 😊

Chunky Applesauce

4 apples (McIntosh is what we used)

1 ½ cups of water

½ cup of brown sugar

1 tsp cinnamon

¼ tsp nutmeg

  1. Core apples and half into small chunky
  2. Combine the apples and water in a microwave-safe bowl
  3. Stir the sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg together with the apples
  4. Allow the applesauce to cool.
