Hello Parkside Families!

Can you believe how fast the month of August has gone?  It feels like yesterday we were just welcoming the warmth of summer and discussing all of our summer plans!  Now, we are feeling the crisp fall mornings and the getting used to seeing the school buses back on the roads!  I am very vocal about my love of fall; I love the vibrant color changes, the scents associated with it and of course the start of football!

I cannot move forward into September without saying my biggest “good bye” to our now Kindergarten kids!  I know for all who read my blogs, I have written this every week for the past month…but it truly is a bit of an emotional roller coaster ride through August with kids leaving sporadically through the month.  I know their next stage in learning is going to be a successful one!

The biggest aspect of fall that I love the most is the beginning of our new program year!

Although Parkside does not close for the summer, when we return from the Labor Day break we begin our “unofficial” program year.  This means, many of our transitions are complete, our curriculum goals are outlined, and our program goals for the year have been written.  We have so many new changes that we are looking forward to implementing this year! Over the past few weeks I have been discussing how our curriculum and environments will look different while using Creative Curriculum.  Lisa, Lynna and I have been reading about appropriate practices in an early childhood program and have discovered that Creative Curriculum provides exactly what we are looking for, but there was more we could implement into Parkside’s practices.  Therefore, beginning next week you will see changes in our program that allow more play experiences and child initiated exploration, you will see a decrease of teacher directed activities, you will see our environments change more to provide a variety of different activities.  In addition to the curriculum, some “behind the scenes” work, which I believe will still have a great impact on our program is that we are creating different committees that will focus on aspects that are important to our program: such as hiring/and orientation, playground committees (including our decks), and a leadership committee.  As you may know, I am a firm believer that the success of Parkside comes from our whole team; these committees will also provide opportunities for anyone from our team to participate in these activities. We will also continue to grow our electronic daily notes, Kidreports over the upcoming program year. Yellowstone is finishing up their pilot session and we will move to the Big Sur classroom in October!  There are so many exciting things happening; it’s going to be a great program year!

Before we rush through the year, there are some important dates to remember for the month of September.

*Wednesday, September 18th: Pre-K kids will visit Treworgy Family Orchards in Levant!  We will leave Parkside at 9:00 and plan to return at 11:00.  The kids will participate in a hayride, we’ll pick an apple, get a pumpkin, and of course have a donut!  If you are interested in coming along, please let your child’s teacher know!

*Tuesday, Wednesday September 24, 25: Pictures with Emily McIntosh!  Have you noticed the pictures in the lobby of all of the kids?  Those are some of the pictures from years past with Emily! In the upcoming week you will receive an order form as well as a schedule for when your child’s picture when be taken.  If you are interested in having their picture taken, please make sure to bring in your order form before their picture day. Please stop by the office with any questions!

Have a great long weekend!  We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday, September 3rd!
