Hello Parkside Families,

We have had a great week at Parkside!  This was our first week beginning our project approach theme, “Winter in Maine.” Many of the kids learned about winter activities and sports that are common in Maine while other classrooms learned about winter animals in Maine.  Throughout the month of February we are going to continue to learn about the many different elements of Maine winters.

Speaking of Maine winters we want to thank all of you for being understanding and supportive of our decision to request your child’s pick-up to occur by 3:00 rather than later in the afternoon due to the winter storm on Thursday.

Fields4Kids Update: The kids in Big Sur, Yosemite, and Olympic have had a fantastic time so far at Fields4Kids!  They have had a unique opportunity to work on their hand-eye coordination and gross motor skills with structured games and obstacle courses!  We hope parents, you have been hearing stories at home about your child’s time at Fields4Kids!

Tuesday, February 14th: Friendship Day/Valentine’s Day:  Next Tuesday we will be celebrating Friendship Day at Parkside.  Each classroom will have special activities planned throughout the day.  Our teachers have been talking with your child about the tradition of giving valentines to those who we care for; this concept is certainly a difficult one to understand for the younger children!  Therefore, we encourage parents whose child is in Yellowstone, Big Sur, Yosemite, and Olympic to bring in valentines, but if you are a parent of a younger child who would like to bring in valentines we welcome you to do so!  Please remember if you choose to bring in valentines that EVERYONE in your child’s classroom receives one.  We also want to remind you of Parkside’s candy policy: please do not include candy in your valentines or include it in your child’s lunchbox.  We will be having a special Valentine’s day snack too!  Please talk with your chid’s teacher if you have any questions about this day!

Monday, February 20th: Presidents’ Day and the beginning of February vacation: Parkside is OPEN!  If you are needing back-up care for your older sibling for vacation please contact the office.

Pre-K Registration:  Parents whose child is eligible for Pre-K in the fall (your child must turn 4 BY October 15th): the deadline to sign up for Pre-K is quickly approaching!  We want to encourage you to make the best decision for your child and your family, therefore please make sure you have made your decision by February 24th !  If you have any questions about Parkside’s Pre-K program please stop by the office or email Jen M-R at or myself at  Please remember to bring in the last page from your information letter as well as a check for $100 which is a prepayment for September’s tuition to sign up.

Thursday, March 2nd: Olympic field trip to UMA Dental Clinic:  Our Olympic class will visit the dental clinic at the UMA dental clinic on the Bangor campus.  The kids will learn more about dental health.  Cyr bus will pick the kids up at 8:45 and they will return around 10:15.  We will have a permission slip in the classroom in the upcoming weeks!

Friday, March 10th:  Shut down day; Parkside is CLOSED!  We are looking forward to learning from our 3 presenters who are coming on shut down day!  TJ Hallowell, who is a professor at Eastern Maine Community College, will be discussing diversity; Dr. Colette Sabbagh will be providing us health education; and Holly Twinning, from Maine Yoga Adventures will be teaching us about children’s yoga!  Our training with Holly will help further our agenda in “Mindfulness”.  We will also be continuing furthering teacher education in curriculum.  In addition to these trainings we will will also be providing parent/teacher conferences in the  afternoon from 1-3.  We will have sign-up sheets in your child’s classroom in the upcoming week for you to sign up for a 15 minute conference; if you are unable to come in on Friday to meet with your child’s teacher please stop by the office to arrange another time to meet.

Dear Parkside Families,

First, we want to thank you for supporting and understanding our decision to close Parkside early on Thursday.  Many teachers and families were grateful we put safety first. You may have heard we are predicted to get another severe winter storm beginning Sunday into Monday.  Many of the forecasts are saying this storm has blizzard conditions due to the winds gusting as high as 60 mph!  We are concerned that if this storm is as severe as it is predicted to be, we may have no choice but to close Parkside Monday, February 13th.

Parkside has only closed for the day one time in ten years, when nearly every business in Bangor was advised to close. Please understand that we do not ever want to close, as we know families count on Parkside’s excellent, reliable staff every day. However, Monday’s storm (right now) is predicted to have dangerous conditions that city and state officials may require or advise closing our business.

Of course, we are hoping that this storm goes out to sea, but if we are to close Parkside on Monday we will notify you three ways:

  • We will send you a text message through Remind
  • We will post it on our Facebook site
  • We will post it on our website at
  • We will post using Stormwatch on WABI channel 5

Our decision to close Parkside will be made by 5:30 on Monday morning.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to stop by the office or e-mail me at

Thank you again for your understanding!

Take Care,

Jen V.
