Hello Parkside Families,
It has been a great week! Our Yosemite and Olympic classrooms welcomed back Miss Trudi from the Maine Discovery Museum. She brought her snake named, Lola to show the children. We heard many stories about the snake and her skin throughout the day; we hope you heard some too! We will welcome back Miss Cyndi from the Maine Audubon Center next Monday! Children also had the opportunity to learn about several aspects of fall including learning about leaves and apples. We ended our week with our first annual Parkside Color Run! We are extremely proud of all of the support we received from you and your family; we donated over $1,000 to the Children’s Miracle Network! If you are interested in donating to this charity, please stop by the office. I hope you enjoy looking at all of the pictures from the race (you can see the separate folder titled “Color Run” to see more)!
We received an article regarding childhood obesity this week. It is important for us at Parkside to provide as many active moments for children, which is another reason we loved the idea of having a color run at Parkside. It was awesome watching the kids not only have fun, but exercising was exactly what we were hoping for. Below, is the article from Exchange EveryDay from September 14, 2016.
Child Obesity a Global Crisis
September 14, 2016
Truth is dew from heaven; catch it in a clean receptacle.
“Child obesity around the world has reached alarming levels. An estimated 41 million children under 5 years old are either obese or overweight as of 2014, and the epidemic is hitting developing nations especially hard,” reported Laura Lorenzetti in Fortune Magazine.
“The total number of obese young children in countries in Asia and Africa now outnumber those in wealthier nations like the U.S., and those numbers are growing rapidly, according to a new report from the Commission on Ending Childhood Obesity.
“The study, which was commissioned by the World Health Organization, found that 48% of obese and overweight children under 5 years old lived in Asia and 25% in Africa as of 2014. In addition, the total number of overweight or obese young children in Africa nearly doubled over the past 24 years, increasing to 10.3 million from 5.4 million. For comparison, the U.S. has actually been able to curb the number of obese children aged 2 to 5 years, bringing the percentage down to 8.4% in 2012 from 13.9% in 2004 nationwide.”

Wednesday: Fictional character from a book day! Dress up like your favorite character

Fall Pictures: On Friday an envelope for pictures was placed in every child’s mailbox. We are looking forward to welcoming Emily McIntosh back to Parkside for her second year (you can see some of her pictures from last year in our lobby). Pictures will be on Tuesday, September 27th and Wednesday, September 28th, with a rain date of September 30th. Please make sure to return your envelope to the office before the day your child is scheduled to have their picture taken. We will publish a schedule for each classroom in the upcoming week! Please stop by the office if you have any questions.
Thursday, September 22: 5:00-6:30: Parkside Pizza Night! I need to apologize that I made a few mistakes in last week’s blog when discussing this event. First of all, we will have pizza delivered to Parkside at 5:00 instead of 5:30 and the cost for this event is $7 instead of $5 because of the cost of pizza has increased. This event is open to all families, we invite you to come and eat dinner at Parkside and your child[ren] can either on our playground or inside our classrooms. If you are interested in coming, please stop by the office to sign up by Thursday morning! We look forward to seeing you!
Thursday, September 29th: Parent/Teacher Advisory Meeting; 5:30-6:30! We are looking forward to kicking off our first parent meeting for the new program year. Our hope is to have at least one parent representing at each meeting (we meet once a month on Thursday evening). If you are interested in being a representative, please feel free to e-mail me at firstname.lastname@example.org or stop by the office.
Thursday, September 29th: Olympic field trip to Treworgy Apple Orchard! Cyr bus will be at Parkside at 9:00 to transport us to the apple orchard and will bring us back around 12:00. The kids will have a variety of experiences: they will visit the apple orchard, feed the goats, and ride the hay ride! If you are interested in helping to chaperone, please stop by the office. The cost for this field trip is $5. We are asking for parents to pay the fee to the orchard and Parkside will pay for the transportation there. Please stop by the office to pay the $5 or we can charge your account. There will be a permission slip on your child’s cubby next week.
Hope you have a wonderful weekend,
